Are you a tired, fatigued worker, do you have mental and physical discomfort, and do you think these symptoms are caused by the continuous performance of your work task? These are probably
occupational diseases
. They are related to the health of the worker in relation to the work environment and the task performed within the company for which he or she works.
In this article we will explain what tabulated and nontabulated diseases are as well as the difference with occupational injury.
The difference between occupational diseases and occupational injury
The occupational diseases occur with the passage of time. These are diseases that workers contract slowly and are often difficult to prevent and manage. Also called technopathy, occupational disease occurs gradually but progressively on the body and, if not diagnosed in time, can cause serious damage. Knowing how to recognize the symptoms can prevent the disease itself from becoming chronic. Prolonged exposure for years in a toxic environment can, for example, result in occupational disease.
The ‘ work injury, on the other hand, occurs simultaneously, at the very moment the injury occurs, due to a violent cause and in any case concentrated in a well-defined time frame. For example, an occurrence such as a fall down stairs by a worker in the workplace is defined as an accident.
What are the recognized occupational diseases?
The occupational diseases unlikeoccupational injury , are all the illnesses that a worker contracts over time due to the task performed in correlation with the hazards found in the company.
They are divided into two groups:
–
tabulated diseases;
–
non-scheduled diseases.
Tabulated diseases
Tabulated diseases include the following occupational diseases defined in the specific tables for industry and agriculture, those caused by the work provided for in these tables and those reported within a specific period after the cessation of the task performed at risk. They are set out in the reference tables and are grouped as follows In a list attached to Presidential Decree no. 1124/1965. The worker has the obligation to prove how he contracted the illness in relation to his specific task performed.
List of tabulated diseases
Tabulated diseases are divided into three lists according to the probability of origin:
–
list 1.
This list includes all the occupational diseases whose reliable occupational origin is high.
Belonging to this list are:
– Group 1. Diseases contracted from chemical agents (such as anemia, conjunctivitis, pulmonary fibrosis);
– Group 2. Diseases contracted from physical agents (such as carpal tunnel syndrome, lumbar disc herniation, corneal injury);
– Group 3. Diseases contracted from biological agents (e.g., such as acute hepatitis A and B, tetanus, malaria);
– Group 4. Diseases of the respiratory system not included under other headings (such as pulmonary silicosis, siderosis, tracheobronchitis);
– Group 5. Skin diseases
(such as follicular dermatitis, radiodermatitis, permanent erythema);
– Group 6. Occupational cancers (such as lung cancer, nasal cavity cancer, bladder cancer).
– list 2:
This list includes all diseases whose reliable work origin is limited.
Belonging to this list are:
– Group 1. Chemical agent diseases (e.g., such as pulmonary granulosis, extrinsic allergic alveolitis);
– Group 2. Diseases from physical agents (such as achilles tendonitis, vocal cord nodules, tarsal tunnel syndrome);
– Group 6. Occupational cancers (such as pharyngeal cancer, sinus cancer, multiple myeloma);
– Group 7. Mental and psychosomatic illnesses from work organization dysfunction (e.g., such as anxiety, depression, altered conduct and/or emotionality).
– list 3:
This list includes all diseases whose reliable work origin is possible.
Belonging to this list are:
– Group 1. Chemical agent diseases (such as microscopic polyangiitis, pulmonary fibrosis);
– Group 2. Diseases from physical agents (e.g., such as diseases of the cardiovascular system, thoracic stricture syndrome, dupuytren’s disease);
– Group 6. Occupational cancers (such as brain cancer, esophageal cancer, cancers of the hemolymphopoietic system).
Diseases NOT Tabulated
They are part of the non tabulated diseases all the occupational diseases not specified in the tables but which nevertheless have an occupation-related origin.
In this case, the worker must demonstrate in a more thorough way the actual presence of the disease, explain the type of work performed and their link from which the onset of the disease arises.
List of diseases NOT tabulated
We have:
– Illnesses resulting from incongruous postures (e.g., fatigue, disability, joint pain);
– Hypoacusis (hearing-related diseases);
– Heart-related diseases;
– Allergic diseases;
– Pathologies created by vibrating instruments (such as low back pain and spinal trauma).
